Reference

The BCL has become the longest circle line in the world, overtaking the former «leader» among underground rings – The second circle line of the Beijing Subway, whis is 57 km long.

The length of the existing Koltsevaya Line of the Moscow Metro is 19.4 km with 12 stations.

This is 3.5 times less than the BCL.

  • A full circle turnaround – around 90 minutes

  • Saving travel time – up to 45  minutes

  • Around 50 transfers

Each BCL station has a unique look. Six of them were selected by international architectural competitions: Mnyovniki, Terekhovo, Maryina Roscha, Rizhskaya, Sokolniki, Nagatinsky Zaton and Klenoviy Bulvar.

SOKOLNIKI

HOW THE BCL WAS BUILT

On March 1, 2023, the Big Circle Line was fully launched.

31 stations are open for passengers.

BCL has become the longest circle metro line in the world.

Transport services have improved for 15 million residents of Moscow and the Moscow Region.

For millions of citizens, more than 770 different places of attraction have become closer – parks, museums, theatres, sports complexes, educational and medical institutions.

About 100 modern Russian trains Moscow-2020 run here.

The technical launch of the stations Maryina Roscha, Rizhskaya and Sokolniki was carried out.

The technical launch of the stations Maryina Roscha, Rizhskaya and Sokolniki was carried out.

The technical launch of the section of the stations Klenoviy Bulvar, Nagatinsky Zaton, Pechatniki and Tekstilschiki was carried out.

The technical launch of the stations Varshavskaya and Kashirskaya was carried out.

On April 1, the Narodnoe Opolchenie and Mnyovniki stations were launched.

On December 7, 10 stations were opened at once on the section from Terekhovo to Kakhovskaya: nine new and one reconstructed.

On December 29, the construction of all tunnels on the BCL was completed.

On March 27, the stations Lefortovo, Aviamotornaya and Nizhegorodskaya were opened.

December 31 Elektrozavodskaya was launched. All stations opened in 2020 worked as part of the Nekrasovskaya metro line.

Kakhovskaya, Varshavskaya and Kashirskaya stations of the former Kakhovskaya metro line were closed for a comprehensive reconstruction to be included in the Big Ring.

The first section with five stations was launched on 26 February: Delovoy Tsentr, Shelepikha, Khoroshyovskaya, CSKA and Petrovskiy Park.

In December, Savyolovskaya station was also opened for passengers.

In December, Savyolovskaya station was also opened for passengers.

Construction of several sections has started - more than 10 stations have been constructed.

The construction of the second section of the BCL from Elektrozavodskaya to Aviamotornaya has started.

The construction of three tunnels has been completed on the sections: from the Shelepikha station to the connecting branch that linked the BCL with the Solntsevskaya line; from the CSKA station to Khoroshyovskaya and from the Petrovskiy Park to the Savyolovskaya.

A unique operation was carried out to install the tunneling machine in a limited space at the construction site of Petrovskiy Park BCL station.

The metro builders were faced with the task of lowering the head part of the complex weighing 150 tons to a 25-meter depth.

Construction was carried out on all 24 sites of the first section of the Big Circle Line.

1,400 people were involved in the construction work.

On August 1, the first tunneling at the BCL started – the tunneling machine Yulia began to pave the way towards the Delovoy Tsentr station.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has decided to build a Big Circle Metro Line.

Construction

During the construction of the BCL the possibility of joining the new radial metro lines – Rublevo-Arkhangelskaya, Troitskaya and Biryulyovskaya – to it was laid.

How metro tunnels are being built?

In the 1930s, the first metro stations were built manually: with a pick and shovel. Today, tunneling machines are in the arsenal of underground builders. There are two varieties of such machines: «tens» and «sixes».

The 6-meter diameter machine tunnels two single-track tunnels. The 10-meter diameter – double-track tunnel where trains from different directions run towards each other on parallel tracks.

Deep and low-depth stations

Most of the stations of the Moscow Metro operating since 1935 are deep. They have been built from 3 to 5 years. Since 2011, there are low-depth stations, which are not more than 30 meters deep. It takes approximately 2.5 years to build one.

Deep-laid stations appear where there are a lot of utilities, which require large financial expenses and time. There are three such stations on the BСL: Savyolovskaya, Rizhskaya, and Maryina Roscha

Double-track tunnels

Tunnels from Mnyovniki to Aminyevskaya and from Kashirskaya to Tekstilschiki were constructed with 10‑meter giant tunneling machines. Their use made it possible to reduce the period of construction and installation works.

  • · 33 tunneling machines were in operation
  • · 4 giant shields diameter 10 meters
  • · 29 machines with a 6-meters diameter
